Stop Winging Your KiwiSaver

Your KiwiSaver could be working a lot harder for you. Here's what to check.

Most Kiwis enrolled in KiwiSaver did the bare minimum to sign up — and then never looked at it again.

That's completely understandable. Life's busy. But here's the uncomfortable truth: the fund you're in right now could be costing you tens of thousands of dollars by the time you retire.

The Problem: Default Funds Are Conservative by Design

When employers auto-enrol staff, many people land in a “default” or “conservative” fund. These funds are designed to protect your money from short-term losses — which sounds great, but it means they grow very slowly.

If you're in your 20s, 30s, or even 40s and you're in a conservative fund, your money isn't working nearly as hard as it could be.

A conservative fund might grow at 3–4% per year. A growth fund might average 7–8%. Over 30 years on $50,000, that difference is roughly $80,000–$100,000 in your pocket.

What Are the Fund Types?

Conservative — Low risk, slow growth. Best for people close to retirement (within 3–5 years).

Balanced — Medium risk, moderate growth. A common middle ground.

Growth — Higher risk, higher potential return. Best for people with 10+ years before they'll need the money.

Aggressive — Highest risk, highest potential. Best for those with 15–20+ years ahead.

A Real Example: Meet Hemi

Hemi is 34. He enrolled in KiwiSaver when he got his first job and never changed anything. He's been in a conservative fund for 10 years.

By switching to a growth fund, Hemi's KiwiSaver projections jumped significantly — even with the same contributions. The difference? Time, and compound growth doing its job.

One 10-minute switch could mean tens of thousands more at retirement.
