Stop Trying to Look Rich — Start Getting Rich Instead

It’s easy to feel behind these days.

Scroll through social media and it looks like everyone your age is driving flash cars, rocking brand-new clothes, going on overseas trips, and living in homes with kitchens straight off The Block NZ.

But here’s the thing no one’s telling you:
Most of them can’t afford it either.

They’ve just found a way to look rich — usually by racking up debt.

And while they’re showing off on Instagram, their credit card, Afterpay, or car loan is quietly charging them interest and eating up their future.

Fake wealth is the fastest way to stay broke.

Too many good people — especially younger Kiwis — fall into the trap of trying to look successful before they are successful.

They buy:

  • $60,000 cars on finance.
  • Clothes, shoes, and gadgets they don’t need.
  • Flash phones and nights out… all on Buy Now Pay Later.

It feels good in the moment. It scratches the itch.
But it doesn’t build wealth. It destroys it.

Because every dollar you borrow today for “fun” is a dollar you can’t use to:

  • Get out of debt.
  • Save an emergency fund.
  • Buy a home.
  • Invest in your future.

There’s nothing cool about being broke with expensive stuff.

We’ve talked to loads of Kiwis who looked successful from the outside — until the bills caught up with them.

They were stressed. Trapped. Living paycheck to paycheck even on decent wages — because their debt repayments were out of control.

What if you flipped the script?

What if you didn’t buy the brand-new car right now?
What if you saved the extra cash instead of buying new clothes every month?
What if you kept things simple until you’d built real financial power?

You’d probably be ahead in just a couple of years.
And unlike most people showing off now — you’d actually have money.

Use debt the smart way — or don’t use it at all.

Debt isn’t always bad.
Some debt, like a home loan, can be a tool to build long-term wealth.

But debt for show? Debt for quick thrills?
That stuff will bleed you dry.

Here’s the rule:
If it loses value and you can’t pay it off quickly — don’t borrow for it.

That means no borrowing for:

  • Clothes
  • Holidays
  • Nights out
  • Tech toys
  • Furniture and appliances you don’t need right now

If you can’t afford it today, save up for it. You’ll appreciate it more — and you’ll stop digging a financial hole that takes years to climb out of.

Start building real wealth — even if it’s slow.

There’s no shame in starting small. No shame in driving an older car, renting a modest place, or saying no to a night out because you’re focused on saving.

What’s cool is having choices.
What’s cool is sleeping well at night because you’re not drowning in debt.
What’s cool is looking after your future — and building a life on your own terms.
